There are those that will just say to hit the delete button.
Yeah, please do. That's partly why it's there.
While this is
a luxury for people that receive messages one at a time, this isn't exactly
an option for people on digest.
The digest people can scroll through it. They can see the e-mail header and
think, "Oh, it's that jackass again, let me hit page down/click the scroll bar
or arrow and get to the next message."
And this doesn't need to deteriorate into a
discussion of how gmail is the second coming or anything either
Bah. G-mail is good, but it's not *that* good.
it's
silly and selfish to think that someone should change their mail client to
filter out messages that they shouldn't have to read.
No, what is silly is that people who get offended by one person can't do the
easiest thing in the world to make it go away - ignore it. Everyone raises a
fuss. People get all emotional and write long missives about being nice, and
how so and so is acting like a jerk and trolling the listgroup. It takes far
less energy to to press the delete key, scroll past a message in the digest
list, and considerably less than that to just ignore whoever is bothering you.
And what is selfish is expecting the people causing the problem to police
themselves. Some people are just that way. So let 'em be that way, and don't
let it bother you.
And before this turns
into a freedom of speech discussion, the supreme court has held that freedom
of speech does not cover offensive or profane language.
Well, you are wrong on that point - freedom of speech does, in fact, cover
offensive thoughts, ideas, and words. Remember: there is a right to free
speech, but no right to not be offended.
The rest of us on this list don't want OUR message
getting ignored by the people with answers to OUR questions because the
first message on a page/in a digest/whatever was a missive from you that
made them think they had better things to do than read list mail anyways.
This is a community of people that are not babes in the wood, Kevin. We all
know about people, and how not all of them are nice, and how not all the time to
people agree on everything. Therefore it stands to reason that we are also
intelligent enough to ignore the trimmings and focus instead on the meat within.
Let's get back to being civil and talking about our cars before Kaleb gets
home and unsubscribes everyone who participated with this thread because he's
tired of spending HIS time and money supporting a bunch of whiners.
Being civil is easy for the majority, but don't let the small minority rile you
up so bad. Breathe in, breathe deep, relax, and skip the message.
