Andrew, you do understand, don't you, you don't have to remove the inner
panels to R&R the door handles?

Those 2 big Phillips head screws hold the handle to the rear. After they
are removed, you have to slide the handle slightly (quarter to half inch
or so) to the FRONT, don't you? I just sent Andrew the job pdf; it says
slide handle toward frnt.

Easy.
Pull back the weatherstripping on the trailing side of the door just
behind the door handle. You'll see a obround(?) plastic hole plug - pry it
out. Once you have the plug out, you'll see two very large phillips head
screws - remove them.
Get a rubber mallet or a rubber tipped hammer and a block of wood.
Carefully place the block of wood against the inside of the door handle
and tap on it to push the handle towards the rear of the car. It will move
back about 1" or so.. Once this is done, the handle (for the most part) is
free of the vehicle. All that's left to do is insert the key in the lock
and turn it to align the lock cylinder rod with the slot in the door latch
so the handle can be removed the rest of the way.
Installation is the reverse of removal.

Excellent suggestion. I can remove the door panels to all sorts of work on
the door and vacuum servo mechanisms, but have never messed with the
outside handles before, so a primer would be great.

Old trick for worn out door handle lock. The door handles on a 123 are
interchangeable with each other, as are the ones on a 126 as well. When
the
driver's side gets wonky, you just swap them around and you have a
practically new door handle lock on the driver's door.

I don't recall these being interchangeable but a new lock (like $300 last
one I got) comes keyed to the car and includes a new key.

Why not just swap the driver's door lock/handle with the one from the
passenger side? They are interchangeable.
If you don't know how to do this, let me know - it takes about 5 minutes
to
do.

The well-worn original key to my W123 300TD has quit operating the
DRIVER'S
DOOR lock. It fits the ignition and PS door flawlessly, however. For
awhile I could UNlock the door, but that functionality recently ceased to
exist. The key actually is slightly chipped in one place near the haft,
but
somehow this ONLY affects the driver's door. What a PIA. Should I go
ahead
and order a second OEM key from the dealer based on the car's VIN, or
could
the problem lie with the DS door lock?
