For something quick, a few blocks east on Queen at Meeting St is
Josephs for some good soup/sandwich kind of things, my son and I popped
in there one day and I had an awesome grilled/smoked corn chowder. The
owner/cook/manager/head woman came over and we chatted about it a bit.
A block closer east is King St, take a left and up the way are a bunch
of restaurants all up and down, some sorta OK others pretty good.
Mellow Mushroom is really good for pizza and sandwiches (we get takeaway
from there sometimes), there is a bbq place or two along there. I am
not a big fan of the local version of bbq but the Jim n Nicks had some
passable ribs. Up further a couple blocks north of Calhoun is a good
Thai place (Basil). There are multitudes of pricier but really good
restaurants all over the place in that area (King, Meeting Streets),
just about any one you pop into. Not to be missed would be Hominy Grill
at Rutledge and Calhoun for brunch or lunch, it is wonderful and not
real expensive but not cheap either. The chef/owner has received all
kinds of awards. On Queen St almost to Meeting is Poogan's Porch, in an
old house -- we went there for my daughter's bday, and whatever night it
was the prices were dirt cheap, like 70s prices or something (I think
one night a week they do that -- could probably check it out) so we
splurged on wine. Food was pretty good, not the best but passable.
Hyman's Seafood over on Meeting and N Market (or a bit north of there)
is good for seafood of all kinds, maybe a bit more touristy but basic
and quite good, not too expensive. On further east on E Bay street are
some good places, I saw Southend Brewery and Smokehouse I want to check
out. Most all these places are on the Google map you linked if you zoom
in a bit you can see them. Keep going on Queen it turns into Vendue and
down the way (I think) at the Vendue Inn is a roof top bar where you can
see out to the harbor -- nice on nice nights to have a drink.
You could walk almost anywhere in not too long, the city is pretty
small, or there are pedicabs and taxis that are fairly cheap.
If he has a car, just over the Ravenel Bridge in Mt P is Gullah Cuisine,
I have not eaten there but it is supposed to be quite tasty for some
real deal Lowcountry soul food.
I will think of more, but that should get him going. If he wants some
really good place$$$, I can give you a list of some I really like.

FLETC is near Colonial Lake:

Subject: Re: [MBZ] OT: Charleston area Restaurants?
Not sure about "values" but there are lots of excellent restaurants.
What do you/he like? Lowcountry food is the best, then there is the
higher-end take on Lowcountry food. And summadat good Gullah soul food
yumyum. I'm not sure where FLETC is (Max is probably into all that
given he is a Navy boy) so not sure where he is relative to Charleston
proper. Give me more specifics and I can give some recommendations.
Shrimp n grits is the way to go though...

I know some of you are in the Charleston area. One of my sons is

at the FLETC there for USCG "A" school. Any good values in restaurants to
recommend?
