I get a hoarse "wha, wha, wha" noise when my 1983 300TD turbodiesel wagon reaches 65 mph and above. The noise dissipates (goes away) when I drop below 60. The noise appears to emanate from under the hood just in front of the windshield, roughly in the center. I can't rule out something in the instrument cluster, although the tach, temperature gauge, and other indicators are unaffected during these episodes. It has nothing to do with the cruise control or radio or ACC operation either - I've checked. Vehicle handling is OK during these noisy episodes, although it is unsettling to say the least.
So what could be the source of this noise ONLY at high speeds? Could it be a problem in the turbo? The noise invariably manifests itself in relation to road speed, not engine revs. I am truly perplexed, as this has never happened to me in 21 years of driving these cars.
