I learned a lot about these cars when I was looking for one. Most importantly,
I learned that you better make sure the intake manifold has been replaced
before you buy it. I really liked driving the one I had (at least until the
aforementioned intake blew up on me). I think they revised the intake and that
problem was resolved in 2001. You can find lots of opinions about which ones
are the best. The one thing that I learned was that the older models 97,98, 99
have the "mixed matrix driveshaft" which allows for higher speeds. The
aluminum driveshaft will fly apart at higher speeds, so they reduced the top
speed on the later cars.

In general, they are pretty nice cars. Big, RWD, full frame, and simply
engineered. I would drive another one. The interesting thing is that Ford
dealers are only selling the Crown Vic through their "commercial line." AND, I
heard yesterday that Ford is not going to make the Mercury Grand Marquis after
next year. I rented a 2009 or 2010 Crown Vic recently when I was out of town
for work. They really are pretty nice cars.
