Oh ah yes then that is not really a good reading. Since his cables are
probably not heavy enough gauge yada yada yada. Still...
If nothing else its a bargaining chip. I would not pay more than $200,
less if possible.

W123turbodiesel engine
Does everyone agree with this? If true, is there any practical way to
bypass the starter??

If the starter is not spinning as fast at it should, this test means

I need a second opinion on the following account of a compression test
from
the seller of a 1985 300TD wagon. He himself is a tech and administered
the
test (he's not a Mercedes tech).
"Here are the compression results (the highest reading from each
cylinder)
with a warm engine, jumped battery [after a valve adjustment]. On #3 the
adapter fitting was leaking so re-tested most if not all by snugging up
the
adapter with a socket first, this evened things out significantly. I
did
them on eight compression cycles each. They are lower than I would like
to
see but I believe it is because of a slow cranking speed [allegedly due
to
a
tired starter motor]. There is, however, no way of really knowing this
for
certain unless the slow cranking [due to starter?] was replaced and
another
test was conducted. The readings:
Cylinder 1- 220-225
2- 220
3- 200
4- 210
5- 230
Also noticed when adjusting the valves a very minute nick (1-2mm) on the
edge/side of the #1 cam lobe. It is nothing that I would have any
concern
over at all but just want to disclose everything I see..."
My mechanic says the readings are way too low to allow the engine to
start
in cold temps due to worn rings. He says a new engine rates at 400, and
that 275 is the absolute limit. Any comments? BTW, the car has 300+ K
miles, has been well maintained, and hasn't been driven for the past
year
due to rust issues.
