RTV is probably the most overused sealant anywhere. Won't stick in the presence of glycol (new one on me) gets eaten by gas and who knows what else. Loads of guys skip buying a new carb bowl gasket on a snowmobile and glue it back on with RTV, the gas eats the RTV, a piece breaks off and runs up into a jet and then its time to pay me to poke it back out and replace the gasket properly...
Form-a-gasket is much better stuff. In fact I'm going to use some to seal a side cover gasket on my motorcycle this afternoon. -Curt Date: Wed, 8 Sep 2010 11:02:34 -0500 (GMT-05:00) From: Peter Frederick <psf...@earthlink.net> To: Mercedes Discussion List <mercedes@okiebenz.com> Subject: Re: [MBZ] 91 350SDL water pump Message-ID: <27528847.1283961755006.javamail.r...@elwamui-rustique.atl.sa.earthlink.net> Content-Type: text/plain; charset=UTF-8 Don't use RTV on the pump, use permatex of some sort, else it will surely leak. RTV won't stick to anyhthing with glycol on it, I found this out the hard way on my old Audi fox -- after the third water pump gasket blew out I used liquid permatex and it was still holding 4 years later when I sold it.
