The stuff on the valve cover nor the EGR has much of anything to do with air pollution. You ALDA/proper fuel mixture and timing have more to do with that. Really all that stuff up there is for EGR+cold weather shifting. The only thing the EGR is doing is killing your engine. Quickly. If your worried about my air, use b100.

The CA and 85 models does not have all that vac crap on the valve cover and is much superior because of this. The stuff on the valve cover only delays/controls shift points in the cold with the EGR. Really, its all but useless.

The transmission ones don't go inside the cabin :D

If your state doesn't pop the hood for emissions (if they do at all) I
highly recommend removing all the EPA crap off the valve cover. Your car
will love you for it. There are threads in several places about it.

How does one distinguish the transmission-related vacuum lines from the

That's part of the kickdown system, if I recall, and if you remove the
cover you'll see some vacuum valves with little white plastic levers that
operate them. These are usually toast after a number of years, and i
many
cases are completely non-functional due to being worn out.

Rusty can get you a new set, which takes all of about 5 minutes to
replace.

Once of those cheap fixes that yields nice results.

Does it have that box on top of the
valve cover that has 3 or 4 lines (or maybe more) going
in/out of it? On my son's 84 SD those lines did not
fit well, and that caused problems. On my wife's 84SD
they seem to be better behaved, in better shape I guess.
