Except for the mil-spec laptops, the ThinkPads are arguably the most durable. The keyboards are reputed to be the best of laptop keyboards. The other nice thing about the ThinkPads is that a maintenance manual is readily available, and they are designed to be easily repairable. There is a great online community, ThinkPads.com. They are the Mercedes-Benz of the laptop world.
One caveat: the early T4x units have chronic problems with the ATI video processor losing SMT integrity with the mobo. I believe this is not a problem with the Intel video processors, and was solved with the later series. My personal preference is for the T43. I am working on replacing the T40 that I'm typing on now with a T43.
