You have a good list there, I would add a 66 GTO in dark blue. The SS396 was particularly nice in that lighter blue color too, maybe with a black vinyl top! My 71 Monte Carlo (first "my" car) was a lighter blue with black vinyl top, I really liked that color combination. I'll have to find a pic somewhere and scan it in.

I kinda like the styling on the previous S class (don't know the chassis number) -- a bit edgy at the front but generally understated, very elegant and powerful looking. I don't like the current style, looks to boy-racerish for a big sedan.

I could not agree more. The 126 is an elegant car, and among the best to look at ever made.

Others I would nominate for best looking Top 10: Mercedes SS & SSK , 300SL Gulwing, 1962 corvette (an obvious knockoff of the 300SL) 1967 Chevelle SS396 ( in turquoise blue) 1963 chevrolet impala, 1965 Chevrolet impala.

I would rank this way:
300SL Gullwing as #1 overall and #1 in sports car class

126 #2 overall, and #1 in large sedan class.

It is interesting to see how MB defines the look of cars for the next 10-20 years. like how the look of the 124 defined that taillights had to be triangular. Before that, the 116 and the later 123 defined that taillights had to be large and rectangular. (Think original taurus) Since that the 140/201 defined how cars look until now.

My wife's 300SD (unfortunately not an SDL) in ivory was parked out front of the house today, and I was sitting on the porch looking at it, and came to the conclusion that this car is about the most perfect styling design of any car I have ever seen. Not sure what it is, but it just "works" and is very pleasing to the eye. I recalled that in the early 80s I was walking in downtown Boston one day, and a new 126 of some sort appeared rapidly in front of me as I was walking past some building at a corner, the car came to a stop at a light and I just caught the glimpse at first of the front end, and I remember thinking "wow, that is an awesome car -- I want to have one." At that time, $40k or so was a bit beyond my means, but I thought... "someday." BTW that car I saw, and I remember very clearly, was in ivory as well. And there I sat today looking at that ivory 126 and thinking the same thing I thought when it just appeared in front of me 30 yr ago....
