Yes! Good catch. If the shifter is sloppy, the plastic bushings at each end of the rod from the shifter to the trans need to be replaced first. That will likely cure the park switch issue. Glenn did not say that the shifter was sloppy, but often you don't notice until the bushings are replaced, then the difference is obvious. That was exactly what happened on our 81 240D several years ago. I had forgotten about that until you reminded me!

But it jiggling the shifter can change the behavior, could this not be a
shifter bushing problem?

Neutral safety switch is on the side of the transmission.
Big messy PITA to get at, of course.  Can be disassembled and cleaned,
I've done it.  (Drill out rivets, replace with suitable screws.)  Way
easier to just get another one.
