Larry,

Yes, I have the list on paper and I'll send you a copy. The '95 finally was
all
together back at Thanksgiving, and performed beautifully on a trip to NYC and
back since then. The car is an absolute pleasure to drive now, and soon my '87
wagon will have the same treatment. I did not replace the subframe mounts yet,
that will wait for a less busy time. Before I started, riding in the car was
like riding on springs on a piano dolly; very bouncy and lots of rear-end
steering. After new rear shocks and new struts/bushings and an alignment (and
front end work including lower ball joints and tie rods and steering shock),
all
that is fixed.

If you're planning to do this work, the most difficult parts are the two
bushings for the spring link (aka lower control arm). The inner bushing is
mounted in the spring link, the outer bushing is mounted in the wheel carrier.
I purchased a $100 Sir Tools copy of the special MB tool for the outer bushing;
it requires that the brake rotor and parking brake assembly be removed, and the
dust shield taken loose so that you can get proper access and clearance around
the bushing. Tool worked great on the '95, but broke on my wagon. The inner
bushings are also a bear. On my '95, I ended up taking them to a shop to have
the old pressed out and new pressed in for $40. On my wagon, I have a "shop
made tool" consisting of a foot of 3/8-12 Acme threaded rod and some nuts, a
piece of pipe with the ends cut absolutely square, and an assortment of
sockets;
the tool just barely is enough to do the inner bushings. I've finished the
right side of the wagon; when I do the left side, I'm going to use a torch to
heat up things so that life for the tools will be a little easier.

-Max

Hi Max,
Last Summer you were prepping for a rear suspension repair & upgrade. At the
time several people (incl. me) requested a list parts needed. Were you ever
able to put that list onto paper? Would love to see it - still no specific
problems but it's one of those problems that sneak up on you without noticing.

I assume the '95 is all back together by now? Driving nicely I hope? Sorry
if you have gone over this - there are so many MBZ posts I often get behind in
reading all of them. Hope I don't miss something important...

Did you notice a big improvement?

TIA -

I'll send it directly (anyone else need it?) but I'm not sure it will
all apply to you, as the hardware changed at some point, increasing the
bolt size from M10 to M12 I believe. Maybe someone here is smart enough
to know if the larger bolts will be fine as long as ALL the
camber/torque/strut/etc arms are replaced along with bushings and
sleeves?

Hey Max -
When you get that list, please share it, OK??

My '91 300D might need a similar rebuild one of these days ....

Thx
