The Ultimate Boot Disk is a CD iso image with a lot of boot
"floppies" on it.  Including some hardware tests.  I think I
would start there.  Doing that won't even risk any data on the
disk.

If the hardware passes the tests, then move on to software.

Personally, I'd install GNU/Linux - but then I think that's the
solution to _all_ computer problems. *grin*
