somehow I couldn't make sense of that either.  The light should be on when the 
key is in the on position, but goes out when the engine is started. Didn't 
sound like a alternator problem, more like open ground or bad switch

Need to correct the last statement: Should red "light off with key on and
engine off and light on with engine running is a sign....". Reading your
original post, sounds like a problem in the ignition switch.
