Nah I don't think its a tire, it'll go away if I push the clutch in and leave 
it in at least 10 seconds. Also this noise started appearing around the time I 
replaced the clutch master cylinder. The clutch MC I've got in now has the 
wrong actuating rod so the clutch releases really high, like in the last 1/8th 
of the stroke. Rusty confirms newer 240Ds like my '83 use a longer rod (guess 
where I got this MC from?) and older cars like my '78 (the one with the issue) 
use a shorter rod. MB has just one MC now but offers a replacement rod. I've 
got a new MC/rod combo on order and I'll replace when it gets in.

I also had a bad axle with an intact boot - on the '92 300D at ~350,000
miles.

If you think it's the tire - swap it with the spare and see if there's a
difference ---
