Compression fittings work fine in situations where the pressure does not change significantly. When the pressure cycles, you eventually deform either the tubing or the collar, and they leak. Temperature cycling is also bad for the same reason.

The result is that the tubing can shrink inside the collar. this leads to leaks or fractures, as stress corrosion is also a result of strain changes.

Flare fittings can also leak, but there is a very small chance in comparison that the tubing will come loose and slide out of the fitting.
