Anyone here have any ideas on repair of the seat backs on these old cars?
My 76 300D has issues that need to be dealt with before I destroy the MB
Tex totally.
The driver's seat bottom was bad when I got it. I did the repair that
others have done - photos etc posted on the web somewhere that I used as
an example.
Basically, I stripped the old pad off and used carpet as an initial
cover on the spring box tied on with nylon pull ties and then some of
the white fibrous stuff from Wal Mart as padding and then stretched the
cover back on. I should have used a bit more of the white stuff as it
has softened up a bit but I was reluctant to over stress the cover when
putting it back together.
I am ok with this repair. It looks fine and has been good for several
summers now. I did not put the pool noodles in the spring box. Did not
think it was needed as yet. Could readily do the passenger side too as
it is starting to go.
The problem is the back. Again, mainly the driver's seat as it gets the
most use. The bolster on the outer side is about gone and I have a pile
of straw like stuff on the floor behind the seat.
Rusty has been kind enough to look up these things and advise as to the
cost of the seat back pads. A bit pricey but could be done.
However, in due course the back seat will need attention too. It is not
used as much but sounds a bit brittle so I cannot ignore it indefinitely.
The rear seat pads are apparently not available.
So therein lies the issue. I may need to have some other means of doing
the back seat so, should I do the fronts the same?
Has anyone come up with a means of repairing the seat backs? Has anyone
had this sort of thing done by an upholstery shop? I sort of assume that
a shop could make up something similar out of good dense foam and shape
it a bit to match the original contours. Might not be anymore expensive
than the horsehair pads.
I suppose the alternative is to look for newer seats from another MB but
I am reluctant.
Ideas??
