The heart of the microwave is (still) basically a high-voltage vacuum tube power supply. The rest is all command and control. So long as transformer, magnetron, and diode are OK you could replace all the guts with a toggle switch: HEAT/OFF.
Wouldn't be safe, or convenient. Flanging in a Time-O-Lite would be cooler. Darkroom supplies are a glut on the thrift market now.
