Maybe my thinking is colored by only having experience with a 1980s F250, C6 tranny, converted to dual rear wheels, that never saw more than 9mpg empty and had a top speed (governor limited) of around 65mph. Perhaps it suffered from lack of locking torque converter and too short a final drive ratio?
