You have to take the buttons off to get the cover off. Use a pair of pliers and carefully pull them straight out, one at a time.
And no, you have to take all the ancillary stuff off, including the temperature wheel and fan speed buttons. There are plastic covers on all sides that you have to remove to get at the circuit boards.
