I don't think a school bus will get appreciably better mileage, you'd really want a grey dog or the like.

These things were not designed to be thrifty when it comes to fuel. As others have said, if you are serious about this, look for a diesel. Another consideration would be to fond a diesel bus shell and finish (pimp) out the interior. You have the room for one in your back yard....
