On the older engines there's a tube or pipe directly connecting the engine to the gauge. The gauge reads the actual physical pressure. The gauge should be pegged during driving and should indicate at least 1 bar/15 PSI at hot idle.
I think the newer engines have an electrical sender. Not sure when the changeover happened.
