I also had a 1978 and 1984 4-door and never touched the valves on those.
Not nearly as many miles on these two.

After about 100kmi (maybe a year after I replaced the timing belt), my '78 diesel became a little reluctant to start in below freezing weather. Valve adjustment remedied that.
