The 1.4 was the cpu I replaced with the 2.4.
Not familiar with much of the Linux terminology yet,
but I'm learning (slowly). Thanks for the info. I'm printing out these replies for future reference.

I run Windows 7 on the kids' computers of that vintage (the 2.4, is
1.4 a typo?) and they run at a decent rate, as long as you aren't
doing a lot of stuff at once. They can watch Youtube full-screen
without hardware rendering. Any Linux should be better in all
respects.

Damn Small Linux (DSL) met that description about five years ago, but not
sure about now.

The command line will run on anything, just install Slackware. :)

I have used Debian on my server for many years, for servers I will
always go Debian in Linux - though I'm considering a jump to FreeBSD
on my "new" VPS.

Ubuntu seems to have it sewn up for easy desktop environment, and
that's what's going on my (formerly-SWMBO's) development netbook once
I get a functioning SSD from Newegg. Currently it is on SWMBO's new
laptop, though I might recommend starting with the 11.10 betas - 11.04
is not as stable as I would want and at least you'd be in line for the
updates.

At work I run a lot of CentOS P3/early P4 machines, but as a user I
prefer the Ubuntu update frequency and access to updated applications.
I do think CentOS is a good combination of stability and utility for
a workstation, if you stay away from Evolution, and it runs well on
older (even 2000-vintage) hardware.

I looked at a bunch of others, even use a number of them at work, but
most of them don't have the updates/application support for me to
recommend them for general use, and I have a bias that Linux should
not look like Windows out-of-box so I can't suggest that other one. :)

Best,
-Tim
yet I teach the kids on the dark side...
