Very likely the two plastic gears that connect the speedo to the
odo. They get soft and crumble. Had to replace them on the 81
124. I believe the same kit will work for yours. Search Ebay for
Mercedes speedo gears. Not too expensive and an easy fix. Took
longer to take the speedo out of the instrument panel then to
replace the gears once it was out.

Speed works, odo does not. Slipping gears, broken gears. That is
about the only choices I see.
