Not according to the body shop. The fellow had his assistant raise the
right front on a jack and showed me that the attachment for the right
lower control arm was bent backward so the sub-frame would have to be
replaced, which would require removing the engine.
The estimate includes $2275.35 of parts, including,
- Right lower control arm $490.00
- Right strut $294.00
- Right knuckle $350.00
- Suspension crossmember $590.00
It also includes,
- 13.5 hours of body labor $634.50
- 9.3 hours of paint labor $437.10
- 11.7 hours of mechanical labor $877.50
- 6.0 hours of frame labor $450.00
- 9.3 hours of paint supplies $279.00
plus tax for a grand total of $5359.01.
I went to the body shop in Santa Fe with Shirley (and Ori :-) ) in the
'95 E320 and talked with the owner of the shop. After showing me the
damage, he had his assistant swap the left front wheel of the '95 E320
(the more worn of the '95's front tires) with the right front of the '94
E420. With a more worn tire, there was more clearance at the back of the
'94's wheel well. We took off (Shirley in the '95 and me in the '94) and I
noticed the tire rubbed when I put on the brakes. So I pulled off the
road in the industrial area, pulled out the 2 pound hammer I brought
along, banged off the plastic panels on the outside of the body just
behind the right front wheel well, and then banged the metal about 1/2"
further back. I then swapped the other front wheels so both of the 16"
winter tires would be on the front of the '95 and we took off again.
We drove the 43 miles home on back roads (a very pretty drive along
Bishop's Lodge Road) with no problems.
