I almost agree with everything Dave M. said - EXCEPT:
If you're driving short distances per start, oil consumption even in a
tight engine can increase to a qt in 1.5-2.5kmi. If the timing chain is
stretched, oil consumption may increase too (not sure why - may be
because rings carbon up).
If the smoke at cold startup is white - it is almost always because the
glow plugs have not gotten sufficiently hot (haven't remotely reached
their max temp of 1180 deg. C.). Allow the plugs to glow for 10-20
seconds AFTER the dash light extinguishes and I believe your white smoke
will be reduced 80-90%. This is a MAJOR problem with OM603 engines, much
less of a problem (but still a problem) with 602 engines and almost no
trouble at all on 601 engines. I believe it results from the
battery/cable capacity (the same battery/cable are used in all three
cars) being less than generous for the 6 15A glow plugs while quite
sufficient when only 4 plugs need to be powered. Allowing the 6 plugs to
glow longer allows them to reach the same temperature that four plugs
will reach in a MUCH shorter time.
