You need software on the computer or whatever to talk to the OBDII box: there are various free and not-so-free possibilities. OBD2Spy is one popular one: http://www.elm327-bluetooth.com/obd2spy/ Then you drive around and watch all kinds of realtime data as well as being able to pull CEL codes! As usual with these kind of things, rolling your own takes a little more effort than buying a dedicated scan tool, but it's also a more flexible and powerful solution.
