I dunno about a 603 but a 617 will overheat. The thermostat blocks the return 
passage through the block and diverts coolant to the radiator.

Its been my experience the engine will do fine for maybe 30 minutes or until 
you shut it off and restart, at that point no coolant will go to the radiator 
and the engine will overheat.

That's what I had half-remembered from reading about the procedure before!
What is the purpose of the jammed-open termostat?  Why can't you just
remove it as with other cars?
