This is turning out to be a major PIA. When cold, the 1985 300TD
won't start unless I give it a throttle boost, no matter how long I
pre-glow. Also, when I shift into Drive and head out the car stalls
and I have to repeat the preglow all over again. Once the car is on
the road there is no problem with stalling, etc. Is this an injection
pump or glow plug issue, neither, or both?

My old 300D did exactly that one winter, but only after a snow. It turned out to be the short fuel hose between the inline fuel filter and the IP. It didn't leak fuel out, but had a pinhole leak letting air in. After nursing it to where it would idle, it ran as if nothing was amiss. Started like a champ with a new hose.

It stayed warm enough in the garage that it started well most most days and only acted up when left outside to freeze after driving in the salt. But the salt got to it anyway.
