I have a 96 C280 that had a monowiper with similar issues. It ultimately
deteriorated to being unable to stop the wiper blade without turning off
the car. I tried replacing the combination switch a couple of times (you
would think that I would learn, but this happened over the course of
several years and a couple of different dealerships/garages...).
The problem for me was not the combination switch but the relay that is
located within the main fuse box. Have a look at the following site for the
illustrated repair.

The repair suggests taking apart the relay to find the soldered connections
that have deteriorated over the years. I found it really difficult to spot
the defective connection(s). In the end, I just used a very hot soldering
iron on all the connections in the area suggested by the repair.
