Thanks, Loren.  For once I did in fact do the troubleshooting in advance,
everything is good as far as vacuum pressure (at least, with an isolated
engine bay) until I put the pump directly on the shutoff.  Once there, I
can neither draw a significant vacuum by hand with the engine on or off
(pump - coupler - vac tube - original coupler - IP), nor can I shut down a
running engine by hand or by engine vacuum.

The only oddity is that I was expecting to also see oil, but maybe since it
got bad very quickly I've been lucky.
