Go to ifixit.com and see if there is anything on there about a repair. They have reasonably-priced replacement parts too, at least until your gummint gets its paws into the deal. I repaired a macbook with a power board i got from them for $US80, Apple were saying $1000 to fix it (which is basically "buy a new one"). A few special screwdrivers and such, and a big sheet of paper to tape all the little bits to, with numbers of the step, and off you go.

Searching online reveals that it is a issue but of course Apple is taking the high moral ground and telling people nothing except that their products are that fantastic that they should pay through the nose for them, however Fay loves it but she falls in that category of people who have limited computer knowledge.

Can offer any details about the Mac, as in model or order number?

I can look it up in GSX (Apple's service system) and see if there are any issues with these parts.
