that's not exactly the whole story; in CA, most of those cars without plates have a small paper temp tag taped into specific places in one of the windows.

Yet in 30 years of driving and plenty of times with questionable plates,
California is also the only place in the world where I've been pulled over for
having an expired sticker, naturally at night during the trip home from buying
the W115 300D.

i can beat that for foolishness; my wife got a ticket for not having a *month* sticker on her tag. in fact, it was there, but in the decades since it had been issued, it had faded to where it was difficult to read. (people at the DMV window at the local AAA had never heard of such a thing, and simply handed her another one. we still ended up having to pay a "processing fee" for a ticket that was BS.)

In fact the sticker had been paid but not applied by the PO (cop looked it up
in the computer), so he let me off. I'd have been better not to have had plates
on at all!

i was once pulled over by a CA Sheriffs deputy-ette who claimed i had an "invalid plate" because she didn't find it when she plugged it into her computer as i drove by on a mountain road. turns out that in their infinite wisdom, the DMV had set up their system such that you can't get a result on a tag by merely plugging in the configuration, but must also plug in a plate 'type'. she nothing about Amateur Radio or the Call Tags that are issued to licensed radio operators, and even less about the "HA" 'type code that needs to be entered along with the configuration. once she had run the reg with my papers in hand, she reneged on her position about how the previous owner must have forged the tags. (i'm the vehicles original owner, and those are the only tags that have ever been on the vehicle.)

cheers!
