Makes perfect sense to me: pressure test it.  If you don't have one, you
should be able to borrow a cooling system pressure tester from AutoZone,
etc.  Typically, they charge you for the tool and then refund your money
when you return it.  I found this particular tool so useful I kept it, but
then I had three 20+ year old cars at the time.

Pressure test the system. Find out if it holds pressure. If not, then it 
is leaking somewhere.
