It appears it was the coil.
Apparently the farstone place replaced the coil and charged him for
it, but then took the new coil off and put the old one back on (or
did a snears auto practice and never changed it) So he thought it
had a new coil, but it didn't. I have not heard the whole story, but
the new coil was put on , and it runs ok now.

1. Has the fuel filter been replaced? Sounds like possibly a low fuel
pressure issue.
