When I was an undergrad, there were people in their 70s working on a BS.
As a grad student, there was one of Rickover's guys, retired Navy
Captain, in his 60s working on a PhuD. Another guy was in his 60s.
He got his PhuD too.
SWMBO finished her Master's at 53, after a 30 year hiatus. She was
harassed out back then. There never was a successful female Master's
student in that department until many years later.
I got my PhuD at 45.
I don't have as much respect for 20-something PhuDs because most have
no practical experience.
SWMBO and D-I-L are conspiring to have my son's major professor sent
to Germany for his graduation. There is a little-known rule in the
system that if the Major Professor can't hood the graduate, that the
graduate can be hooded by a PhuD of their choice. SWMBO found out a
Prof she knew got to hood his daughter at some univ out east because
the Major Professor was unable to. So SWMBO wants me to be able to
hood my son when he walks across the stage.
