I don't think that was what the original article said. I believe they said the cars cost more and so did the fuel and that was why they did not believe them to be such a good deal anymore.

Resale value.
People in the used market seem to be more interested in the diesels than the 
new car buyers are, so they seek out used diesels and pay a premium for them, 
especially VW TDIs.
