yep; i've had both straight keys and bugs; have a modern version of the bug (an electronic paddle set) next to me here on the desk.

change your statement "Spacing of the clicks told the listener what letter was being sent." to "Spacing of the dots and dashes told the listener what letter was being sent", and you'd be correct.
