Dan, I can't tell you if the 002 997 53 36 is Chinese or not. I can tell you that it is made by MTC which is a well known aftermarket company and not Genuine Mercedes. That part number fits all 616 & 617 diesels and is located on top of the valve cover. Mercedes does not show that it is replaced by any other number.
The 003 997 00 36 fits only M117.962 and M117.963 5.0 liter V-8's and is located on the throttle body housing. Mercedes does not show that it is a replacement for any other part numbers. It would definitely be a Genuine Mercedes item and I sell it for $68.00.
