It is amazing what a few miles can do. I grew up in Rockford, IL and my wife grew up in Chicago. My parents and her parents bought very much alike bungalows in the late 70s for about 30K. My parents sold their impecably maintained and upgreaded bungalow 30 years later in Rockford in a bidding war for 73K. My wife's parents still live in their house and it is worth upwards of 300K, with few upgrades.
Odly enough, my home in Carbondale, IL has doubled in value in 12 years with relativly few upgrades and has dropped maybe 5% in the "great MBA recession".
