i agree that every year or 2 seems overly
cautious; especially since failure mode isn't
likely to be catastrophic or without warning.
I change 'em by sight/smell. When they leak, replace them. The
failure mode (for the fabric-covered stuff) is gradual, not catastrophic.

I put new hose on the 300D last year in august
maybe. The new hose is leaking and I will
replace all of it. It was from Rusty. Either
the current fuel is eating the hose or the
current hose is not as good as the oe hose. I
believe the latter, because I noticed the rapid
deterioration 10-15 years ago. I do know that
the switch to ULSD has led to rapid erosion of
the IP DV union orings, so it stands to reason
that it may have deleterious effects on the
return hose too.
I replaced the hose on the SDL last year also.
Since I have the head off, I will change the
hoses when the head goes back on.
I agree, to only change them when they leak, but
my experience has been that the hose does not
last long.
I am not advocating that you have to change the
hoses annually, just my experience is that they
seldom last more than a year or two unless you
want to change only the one leaking. then I end
up changing a hose frequently. I decided that
with $4 or $5 Diesel fuel, it makes more sense
just to change them all and not waste the fuel.
When fuel was 27¢ or 35¢ a gallon, I only changed
the one that was leaking after I had no more left
to cut off and stick back on.
