Well the problem I believe is that the public transpo might not go to the places he needs to go at the times he would need to go there, in a "safe" and timely fashion. He actually has little interest in a car other than for this purpose as described below. He has been getting around by shank's mare, a bike, and the Metro, and he is content with that, mostly.

But I take your point.

Ditto - I don't know how it runs in the middle of the night, but my
daughter did NOT want a car when she lived in DC. She used the public
transportation all the time. We parked the cars and rode the busses and
subways when we visited - no problems.

Easy: Give him is choice:

1. Two feet, possibly mit shoes
2. Hybrid Pedipowered organic green urban vehicle (embraced by the

hugo, and many other tip cup dictators.)
3. Rusted out 240D powered by homebrew BioD. This also doubles as the
fry oil collection device.
4. Rusted out 115 220D or 240D. (See above)

OK, then omit the homebrew bioD. Let him buy fuel.

A focus or other mazda might be a good fifth choice. Mazda is pretty much as relaible as a toada, but with out the arrogant stealership and self righteous owners, and generally at a lower price.

You might pick up a impala or taurus or buik for pretty good money. they are transport appliances.
