'Flew over the pole several times, myself.
'Knew of B-47's being fired upon; one even shot down - McCone and crew.
'Never heard of a B-52 being fired upon in the polar area. ('May have
been - I just didn't know about it.)
BTW, B-52G's were built in 1957-59; H's in '60, '61. (Well, they have those
SN's, anyway; may not have been completed during those times.)

I had a girlfriend in college whose father had been a navigator, he told me
he had seen B-52s come back from missions around the north pole with their
tails ventilated by the rooshans. I guess things got a little touchy now
and then.

operational in G's for 6 years; off active duty for 3 years; to H's for
four years with a 6-month stint in D's to Vietnam; civil engineering for
4 years; back to G's for 2 1/2 years. I never thought of shorter
vertical stabilizer as a "fix" for shearing off one, though - 'could
reduce some side forces, but an H model lost most of vertical stabilizer

OK. In simple terms, they wacked the top several feet off the vertical
tail
and removed the ailerons. This produced interesting control
coordination:
when you bank you need to add power and up elevator (both more than
expected) to maintain level flight. Even so, there were guys (back then
all
guys) that flew them with amazing precision, like behind a tanker.

Well, we were restricted to 270 knots IAS at low level (altitude) for
years.
I think any other "fix" for it may have been done during the 3 years I
was
off active duty, and I don't remember what it was. When I left G models
at
Robins, restriction was still on; when I came back to H models 3 years
later, restriction was off. Remind me; I don't remember.

Wilton,
Tell them how the USAF modified the airplane to reduce the structural
loads.
I think all those with an aviation perspective will find it amusing.

Yes, and very aware of additional warnings in flight manual re.
mountain
wave, excessive turbulence, side loads on vertical stabilizer, etc.

I'm sure Wilton was glad the design was improved.
I'm also sure Wilton was glad he wasn't the one who discovered the
weakness.
