Last time I went snowmobiling in March, I was whipping along at bout 50 mph
in sparse woods west of The Soo, MI, and suddenly came upon a LARGE clear
area (NO trees); saw Coast Guard icebreaker breaking a channel not terribly
far out in front of me and turned parallel to 'im, thinking, of course,
"Obviously, he's on Lake Superior. I'd best stay back here." 'Began to
realize that the undulations I was feeling were not from little wind-blown
ridges of snow but from waves UNDER the snow and ice on which I was riding.
'Kept throttle wide open at about 55 MPH as I made a slow, skidding turn to
the right to get back in the trees and get the hell off Lake Superior.

Some of you were interested the last time I talked about snowmobiles so I
thought I might give you an update on today.
Thursday/Friday we got a solid 6-8" of snow so I figured today I'd get out
and ride. We usually don't get any riding in March so this is a gift. I
took the Polaris I'd talked about before and my '78 Arctic Cat Pantera.

The trailer tilts but its tough to hold it tilted and ride on when you're
by yourself so I stuffed it into the snowbank to make loading easier.
The snow is pretty much like cold mashed potatoes, soft and sticky which
is poor for riding, I did a lot of this: http://i.imgur.com/djBeEyz.jpg
because its sticky I couldn't get up on top of it at low speeds (say under
15mph) so it would plow in front until I lost traction. That pic is when I
tried to head out to the big trails but couldn't get much out of my
friend's yard. That was actually the second time I got stuck...
Another view: http://i.imgur.com/79R4sUL.jpg you can see my friend's house
in the upper left of the picture.
Looking backward: http://i.imgur.com/G0U5VTF.jpg you can't really tell the
snow is up to my knees.
Of course I'd forgotten my snowshoes, what I really needed to do was
snowshoe a path and then ride it, oh well.
I gave up on riding to the big trails and eventually made a figure 8 about
100 yards long in my friend's backyard and then I tried to make one end a
smoother curve and http://i.imgur.com/KShGuHD.jpg found an old maple stump
which impeded progress...
Anyway even though I didn't get out to the main trails and probably only
traveled maybe a tenth of a mile total I consider it a real good day. I
had fun and got some exercise. I'm gonna hit it again tomorrow morning
early. Hopefully the snow will harden up good overnight tonight so I can
get a couple hours of trail building before it falls apart again. Its
supposed to be very warm this week so we'll probably drop the snow pretty
quick.
