I do look like a "pedaling sperm with a loaded diaper" on a regular basis when I'm riding for exercise, i.e. training for racing this fall. When you sweat, you are glad to wear spandex and not have sweat soaked heavy clothes flapping around. When I'm riding to/from work or a clients, I'm wearing normal clothes or business casual.

I _never_ will understand the bike subculture. You mean you
_want_ to look like a pedaling sperm with a loaded diaper? In
spandex with a racing stripe?

When I ride my bike it's in jeans, wearing my usual Birks.
I'm not trying to look cool, I'm just trying to get where
I'm going, and not look like (any more of) a dork once I
get there. My bike is a rusting steel-frame Jap bike from
the 70's, nothing to write home about, and nearly theft-proof.
