Ahhh I think you've not been far enough north. While my camp is a mere 3/4 mile
off the paved road and only 5 miles out of town a "proper hunting camp" up in
the Allegash would be miles and miles from the paved road on paper company land.

Easier country to survive in, water is plentiful, squirrels are plentiful if
small. Weather is nice in the summer, if you don't mind -50F the weather is
nice in the winter too.

My great uncle had a camp in the Allegash, he died before I was too old to go.
Dad talks about how there was no insulation and the guy on the bottom bunk
froze while the guy up top cooked to death. Great uncle Paris (same guy who
built my camp) was one to put the wood stove as close to the wall as possible
so it didn't stick into the room. Dad tells about pouring a cup of water on the
wall every time you walked by to keep it from catching fire.

You plan ahead up there too, nearest real town is Fort Kent and thats not much
of a town...

even when you are waaaaay the hell out in the east, you are always within
minutes of some kind of civilization.  one just takes it for granted that
the solution to your mess is always just around the corner
