BTW I was just over at my local CarQuest and they had Pentosin 5w40 which meets 505.1 and I asked about the price, $9.40 a quart but for $22 a gallon they have their own Car Quest synthetic which ALSO meets 505.1 and MB 229.3 and 229.5. I bought a CarQuest brand oil filter and I'm thinking once I get the car on the road I'll use the CarQuest oil for this first fill. I'll test at 5,000 miles and see what the analysis says.

A little googling shows an interesting disagreement around the interwebs. Apparently although M1 5w40 doesn't meet 505.1 it might just be a failure of anybody to actually test it against 505.1. It seems some enthusiasts don't trust 5w30 to protect the cam and are using 5w40 because of its higher sheer strength. It'd be interesting to know why the 5w40 isn't 505.1 Any 505.1 5w40 oils are EXPENSIVE, like $10/qt... -Curt Date: Fri, 6 Sep 2013 09:48:30 -0700 From: Bob Rentfro <azbob...@gmail.com> To: Mercedes Discussion List <mercedes@okiebenz.com> Subject: Re: [MBZ] Jetta TDI Message-ID: ??? <CAKOy=fwcok4o-uajo8uhihhy-m1zszjxfwfne_yusuksvpm...@mail.gmail.com> Content-Type: text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-1 What I've read lately is that the only Mobile oil 505.01 rated is the ESP Formula 5w30. I have used Moutl and Elf 505.01 rated oil just to be safe.
