I have never owned one, but I have looked at them a lot as I really like the TDI wagons.
Everything I heard and researched indicated that oil is especially critical in their smaller gas engines, although the diesels don't appear to be immune. This was the one issue that kept me from considering a couple of potential cars. No maintenance history, no purchase. I found the same to be true with the Passats, too.
