Buy a mac or load linux?

--R (OK that probably isn't too helpful but it will pretty much fix the
ongoing issue)

Believe I have a rootkit virus in one of my WinXP computers. Win
Defender Offline is supposed to be the most likely way to remove it, and if
that doesn't work then reloading WinXP is the only sure method supposedly.
Windows has 3 or 4 discussions about Defender Offline, and not one
##$%^$$%#!!! website where it can be downloaded from Microsoft; only
various private websites which I've found to be problematic at times.
I'm using Win7 which is new to me, so the Windows download site for Win
Defender is probably someplace I haven't looked yet.
All suggestions welcome.
Thanks,
Gerry

I'm thinking strongly about those two. I bought a refurbished MacBook from
Apple but it had some sort of problems, wouldn't load (Snow Leopard?), and the
closest Apple Store is about 80 miles; so I gave it to my grand daughter who
got it fixed at the Orlando Apple Store and loves it. I would probably go to
some version of Linux if I could find one that doesn't come out with a new
format every time you turn around like Ubuntu does. All I want to do with a
computer is email, search, read various news programs, and have handy files for
storing emails. Modern OS's seem to have gone the way of modern cars; too much
complexity. Gerry
